This month’s race
- Real Cervejaria Vila Nova de Gaia
- Taberna Londrina Vila Nova de Gaia Vila Nova de Gaia
The winner is revealed at the end of the month — until then, the lead can change.
The rankings on this site reward proven excellence — which is exactly why they tend to be dominated by the same restaurants over and over. That’s fair, but it leaves out an interesting part of the story: the places that are growing right now.
That’s what Francesinha of the Month is for. Every month we look across the whole country and pick a single winner: the restaurant that grew the most in reviews — not in raw numbers, but in proportion. A neighbourhood spot gaining traction has the same chance to shine as an already-famous house. It isn’t the ranking (that rewards the established); it’s its counterpart — the stage for whoever is on the rise.
How to win
We compare each restaurant’s review count at the start and end of the month and measure relative growth. To qualify, a restaurant must have gained a minimum number of new reviews and already have some review base — this keeps meaningless swings out of the running. There’s also one non-negotiable condition: the rating mustn’t have dropped during the month. To keep the stage for those on the rise, anyone already in the national Top 10 is left out, and a winner can’t repeat within twelve months. The biggest riser among all eligible restaurants wins.
Why it’s different from the ranking
The ranking measures proven excellence — quality and consistency across many reviews. Francesinha of the Month measures momentum: who is growing right now. Different questions, so we reward different things. Whoever already dominates the ranking doesn’t need this stage; this page exists to surface places on a sustained rise.
When the winner is announced
The first edition is June 2026. Because we only began collecting the data mid-month, this debut edition covers just the second half of June — a shorter sample, and we’re upfront about it. From July 2026 onwards, each edition covers the full month, published at the start of the following one.
